Gelco was founded in 1980 by an entrepreneur in the confectionery industry, who acquired it and began, in January 1982, the production of starch-based gummy sweets and extruded liquorice with a dozen of employees.

In 1987 Gelco was acquired by the GruppoPerfetti based in Lainate and currently known as Perfetti Van Melle Group, a leading multinational company in the confectionery industry. As a result, it became the only company in the group to product extruded liquorice and gummy sweets, including brands such as Goleador, Fruittella, Lupo Alberto, Cola Xplosion, Cherry Xplosion, etc., as well as Group brands such as ChupaChups, Golia, Golia Bianca, MentaFredda and Morositas.

Its presence on the Italian market is through Perfetti's sales network and exports account for 20-25% of its sales volume.
